More Than 200,000 Users Are Falling Asleep Faster With Dodow
Dodow is a simple, natural and efficient solution to a problem that affects almost everyone at some point in their life. That problem happens to be the inability to easily fall asleep at bed time. Sound like you? Then keep on reading!
Why Can't You Sleep?
The autonomic nervous system is the part of the nervous system that manages unconscious body activities like digestion, heart rate and breathing. The ANS consists of the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. When one of these systems is activated the other is disabled.
Activating the sympathetic nervous system triggers the flight or fight response, a defense mechanism that once allowed humans to survive in hostile external environments (noradrenaline secretion, increased alertness, muscle contraction, cortisol to deal with injuries). Neurotransmitters work to activate the sympathetic nervous system, stimulating the center for arousal and alertness: external stimuli like noise are then used to help face the danger and the flow of one’s thoughts is accelerated.
Activating this state was used in prehistoric times when humans were at risk of being put in constant physical danger. Today, however, the fight or flight state has in large lost its significance, especially when it is time to sleep.
Often your inability to fall asleep has to do with your body being unable to maintain balance in the rest and digest state due to hyper activation of the sympathetic nervous system. Causes for this include:
- Intense activity
- A stressful event
- A difficult day
- Light noise
Thoughts like fear of not being able to fall asleep
Neurotransmitters make you more alert, the flow of your thoughts speeds up and your reaction to stimuli increases; thus starts the vicious circle of insomnia and the stimulation of the waking state.
Here's Where Dodow Comes To The Rescue!
Slow Your Metabolism Down
Dodow is a metronome with a light system that teaches you how to fall asleep naturally, without taking any medicine. By synchronizing your (abdominal) breathing with the pulsing light, Dodow progressively takes your breathing down from 11 to 6 breaths per minute.
The rate of 6 RPM is also used in what is called cardiac coherence exercises. According to several studies, the rhythm is the rate that maximizes stimulation of the baroreflex.
The (very) slow breathing rate, at the cardiac coherence rhythm, really slows down your metabolism and your body will be completely relaxed.
Reduce Your Flow Of Thoughts
What's more, concentrating on the pulsing halo on the ceiling has a hypnotic effect. Dodow’s soft blue light (brightness < 1 lux) allows your body to relax, without inhibiting melatonin production. You can choose between the 3 different brightness intensities.
You’ll keep your brain busy with an activity a lot less distracting and exciting than the thoughts that are keeping you awake.
The individual having difficulty falling asleep may not have the power to stimulate an effective relaxation response on his or her own. Dodow is easy to switch on, simple to use and placed near the bed, making the process much easier.
How To Use
The blue light is projected onto the ceiling. Breathe in rhythm with the light, inhaling when the beam expands and exhaling when it contracts.
Focusing on the light takes your attention away from the thoughts that stimulate your waking state. With reduced brain activity, the process of falling asleep becomes smoother and quicker.
Carry on for 8 minutes.Breathing is the only part of the autonomic nervous system that can be controlled consciously. Maintaining a steady pace of 6 bpm for long enough will trigger the baroreflex, a physiological mechanism that will correct the imbalance in the autonomic nervous system which is responsible for insomnia.
Dodow gradually slows down your breathing from 11 to 6 breaths per minute (bpm), in a regular, rhythmic pattern conducive to a relaxed state where the exhalation is longer than the inhalation.
- Tap the touch-sensitive surface once for the 8-minute mode and twice for the 20-minute mode.
- At the end of the exercise (8 or 20 minutes) Dodow switches itself off.
- With Dodow, someone who takes 60 minutes to fall asleep will take no more than 25 - that's over 100 hours of sleep gained per year.
- More than 200,000 people are already falling asleep with Dodow. Among them, those who have difficulties getting to sleep (aged 6 years and up); troubled thoughts, stress, restlessness, chronic insomnia, etc.
